Reading Levels of your Books at Home

Reading at home is fundemental to the education of  your children.  It is not important that they read the correct grade level, but to read everyday.  Your children will pick the level they are most comfortable with reading.  It is important that they read.  The more you read with them the more they will read alone.  The up side is you start a life long bond with your children.

Book Reports

For a student to receive a "Reading Circle Certificate" at the end of the school year, he or she must full fill the following requirements:
2nd grade:   14 fiction and 0 nonfiction
3rd grade: 11 fiction and 5 nonfiction
* Each student will be required to complete a written book report or pass a Scholastic Reading Counts test on the computer for the requirements.  It is best to complete 4 each quarter (second graders will only need to complete 3 the last two quarters).
Of course, it is always better to complete more than is needed to improve your reading.

Spelling List

Spelling lists are made from the reading series and the stories the students are reading that week.  They may also have review lists periodically to go over frequently missed words.
Many times I will have the students write the words five times each on Monday.  During the week the students willl also use each word in a sentence to show they know the correct meaning of the word.  I might even have them complete a word search or cross word puzzle.  The last day of the week they will take a spelling test over the words.  This is usually on Friday.  If the week is only three days long, chances are there will be no spelling words for the week.
Here is a link to the spelling lists for each grade:

Math

Math is something you can't get away from in your life.  It all starts with math facts.  It is required that third graders know addition facts by the end of the first quarter, subtraction in the second, multiplication in the third, and division by the end of the year.  Second graders must have addition facts done by the end of the second quarter, and subtraction done by the end of the year.
