  • Another Fingertip Quickie   (Netscape 4.X)

Find a page you like while surfing? Print it immediately without leaving the page or your keyboard, like this: Press Ctrl + P on the keyboard and just click OK when prompted.

    Incompatible DOS Video?   (Windows 95/98/NT)

A few video cards come equipped with DCII drivers, which of course are DOS-Based. This can be a problem with many DOS Plug-and-Play drivers which do not work with Windows 95/98. Make sure you comment out (using REM before the line), any lines that reference these drivers in the CONFIG.SYS or WIN.INI files to prevent any errors.

Looking for More Icons?   (Windows 95/98/NT)

Look in the \windows\moricons.dll. File. This file is very useful when you're making a shortcut or want to change an icon on your desktop. Check it out: Right-click a shortcut icon select Properties, and click the Shortcut tab. Next Click on Change icon. In the File Name section type in /windows/moricons.dll and a big list of icons will appear for you to chose from.

All At Once   (WordPerfect Suite 8)

WordPerfect Suite 8 will allow you to change your font size or set your margins for an entire document with one simple step. To do this, click File/Document/Current Document Style. The Styles Editor dialog box will appear giving you many styles to choose from. Once you choose an option, it will be applied to the entire document.

    Purged Printing   (Windows 95/98/NT)

If you've ever begun printing an file only to realize you still need to add another page to the document or you need to edit something, try this: Double-click the printer icon in the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Select Purge Print job. Your printer will stop printing and save you from wasting more ink. This will also save you from printing an incorrect copy of your document, then having to edit it and reprint it again.

You Didn't See That!   (Windows 95/98/NT)

You can immediately access your screen savers so that no one will see what you've been working on. Open Windows Explorer and go to the \Windows\System folder, select and drag the .SCRfile that corresponds to your screen saver to the Desktop. This is a quick way to protect your machine if you set up the password protection for your screen saver. Simply double-click the screen saver icon from your desktop and the screen saver will immediately appear before your eyes.

    Mount Up   (Windows 95/98/NT)

Compressed hard disks or diskettes need to be mounted before they are accessed. With Windows this process is executed automatically at boot up, as soon as Windows detects them. If you aren't using Windows compressed diskettes aren't automatically mounted. Just use the parameter /MOUNT followed by the diskette's drive letter. In DOS you should type the command like this: SCANDISK /MOUNT A: to mount a compressed diskette from the A drive. Need more info? Check the Windows Help file for details.

    Beep Me!   (Windows 95/98/NT)

When you press the Numlock key, you'll notice how the light turns on and off. If you turn on the Toggle Keys feature, the system will beep when CapsLock, Numlock, or ScrollLock is pressed. Double-click the Accessibility Options in Control Panel and leave a check mark in the Toggle Keys box. This is a great feature for fast typists or if you often use passwords that are case-sensitive. Now you'll hear a beep if you ever accidentally hit the CapsLock when reaching for the Tab or Shift keys.

Follow The Arrows And See What You Find   (Netscape 4.X)

Have some time? Click any of the menu options on the Location Toolbar and take notice of the right facing arrows beside the menu selections. These menu selections ending with the arrow indicate that another menu will appear upon sitting on it for a second or two. Some menu items are large. They change according to the most recent actions taken by the user. Rest your cursor over various arrows and see what hidden secrets you'll find.

    Any Unassociated Files?   (Windows 95/98/NT)

Nearly every file on your system is associated with a certain program. This ensures that when you double click a file, it is loaded with the proper program. You can change the default application for any file type. Select the file, then while holding the Shift key, click the right mouse button. Select Open With and choose the program you want to use.
