    		• Registry Configuration Errors   (Windows 98)

       The Windows 98 Registry is a complex and vital component of your operating system. The Registry is where Windows stores and organizes information about your software, hardware devices, your personal settings and much more. A damaged registry can cripple your system. In the event that your Registry gets damaged, Windows will present the following warning:

        "Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose Safe mode to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers."

    The problem can usually be resolved quite easily since Windows by default saves and stores five backup copies of the latest version(s) of your registry. The warning message usually appears when you start or reboot your computer. The message is a sign that files in the Registry are missing or corrupted. This may happen when you install new software or hardware devices that conflict with current Registry settings.

    To restore your most recent Registry, simply reboot your computer in Safe mode. The Registry Problem dialogue box will display. Click the Restore From Backup And Restart option. Windows 98 will then find the most recent settings and prompt you to restart your computer again. If this doesn't work and you've made your own backups of the Registry, try restoring it and restarting your system yourself (Warning: do this only if you know what you're doing!). If you're not comfortable doing this, you'll be prompted to reinstall Windows 98 from scratch. This will give you a new Registry and resolve the problem.

    As you can see, the Registry is a delicate component of your operating system. Do not attempt to modify it in any way if you're not an experience user.
