Windows 98 error messages are a fact of life. You might think that errors shouldn't occur on a $2000 (or more) PC, but they do. If you consider the complexity of the technology, the variety of applications and the numerous devices, drivers and peripherals (often from different vendors), it's surprising that errors don't occur more frequently than they do. That being said, below you'll find perhaps one of the most common error messages and the simple solution to the problem.
Error Message: "SUWIN . . . An error has occurred in your application. If you choose to ignore you should save your work in a new file. If you choose close, your application will terminate."
As if this ominous message isn't enough, when you click the Close button this second message jumps out at you...
"Application Error . . . SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module setupx.dll @ 0012:1346."
Don't panic the fix to this problem is quite simple. Just point to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This is Microsoft's Windows Update page. Changes, fixes, upgrades and patches are continuously being made to Windows 98. Like we said, it's not perfect, but most problems can be easily resolved. Go to the site and check to make sure that you're not running an out-of-date operating system. The on screen instructions will prompt you on what to do. Check the site periodically or as soon as the next error message pops up on your screen.
