  • Uh, Oh! No CD-ROM   (Windows 95/98/NT)

If you have an older non PnP CD-ROM drive and your system crashes, you could be up the creek with no paddle. Your best bet is to copy the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files to an installation disk. Do this and remove the word REM from both files. Copy the files MSCDEX.EXE and any associated .sys files on the disk as well. This should keep you safe from loosing the CD-ROM if you ever need to reinstall Windows 95/98 from the CD-ROM.

    Speedy CDs   (Windows 95/98/NT)

By using the SMARTDRV.EXE in DOS 6.2x or Norton's Utilities SPEEDRV you can speed up your drive's performance. Just place a line in your Autoexec.bat file to launch either of the above programs on startup and you should notice a nice little speed increase when using your CD-ROM.

    CD Tunes   (Windows 95/98/NT)

Windows comes with a fully functional audio CD player. With it, you can select Random, Continuous and Intro play modes, or even edit a play list and type in the names of your CDs. It will display the artist and track information as it plays. By default the CD program should launch when you put an audio CD into your drive.

    More HD Space   (Windows 95/98/NT)

So you need more room on your hard drive to install that new program. Close all running programs, then do a search (with Find) for files like: *.GID, *.FTS, *.BAK, *.~MP, *.TMP. . In general it is safe to delete every one of these file types and make more space available. If you're up to it, you can also clean up your TEMP directories where you'll usually find many additional useless files.

    Truncation!   (Windows 95/98/NT)

By default Windows doesn't truncate the long file names. If you like the DOS style file names you can have Windows only display the first eight letters of your files. Try the following:
    1. Goto Start/Run, type 'regedit' and press OK
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/FilesSystem
    3. Right click any blank space on the right side and select New/Binary Value.
    4. Type in 'NameNumericTail Followed by enter'
    5. Double click the new entry and enter 0 as the value
Click OK and the Windows file names will be truncated to display 8 letters.

    Quick Printing   (Windows 95/98/NT)

It's 8:00 a.m. and you're already late. You suddenly remember you forgot to print that document the boss demanded. No problem....if you've got a shortcut to your printer. Click Start/Settings/Printers to see a list of available devices. To create a shortcut to your printer/fax/other, use the right mouse button to drag its icon to the desktop. Now simply find the file you need and drag it onto the printer shortcut on your desktop. You now have time for another coffee.

    Sharing Is Easy   (IE 4.X)

Share files with others is a snap when using NetMeeting. Click Call someone/Tools/File Transfer/Send File. Select the file to send and click OK. The file should arrive at its destination in a flash. Better communication equals increased productivity!

    Component Toolbar   (Netscape 4.X)

With Netscape open, place your mouse cursor over the Component icons at the bottom right corner of your browser. A little pop-up dialogue will appear indicating what the icon represents. Clicking any of the icons will automatically launch the specified component. They include your mail box, Collabra and Composer.

    I-CON't See You   (Windows 95/98/NT)

To change the icon for any files or folders first open up Windows Explorer. From the View menu select Options and click the File Types tab. Go down the list to the Folder item. After you have selected the folder item, click edit, and click on the Change Icon Button. Find a new icon that you like and Press OK to set the change.

Tool Time   (Word 6 and 7)

You may have noticed that the ruler in Word only increases by tenth of an inch increments. If you need more precision, adjust your ruler settings further by pressing the ALT key while you click on or drag the margin or column marker. This will change the increments and provide you with more exact measurements.
